Apple's Snow leopard wiping out user account data

These are bad times for data it seems, with the failure of the Microsoft/Danger servers leading to a loss of data for T-Mobile SideKick customers, and a new Apple bug which causes data loss.

This Mac OSX Snow Leopard bug seems to be rather deadly as it leads to a loss of all user account data. Apple's support forums describe the problem as occurring if a user logs into a Guest account on their Snow Leopard computer, and then logs back into your regular account.

The solutions are few, but the good news is that
Apple has declared that they are indeed aware of this issue and are working on fixing it. They also state that the bug is extremely rare, although the severity should count towards the quick release of a fix.

Currently if you have a Snow Leopard computer, it seems it is best to disable your guest account, or atleast disable and reenable it if you need to actually use it. For those with backups on their Apple Time Capsules,
CNet has a way to recover your account.

If you thought that would be a good reason to be an Apple Time Capsule,
think again. This touted backup device seems to have random failures where the devices just dies after over a year of operation, something which is quite obviously undesirable in a backup device.

Our condolences to those SideKick customers with Snow Leopard backed up on a Time Capsule. The universe has just sent you a message, switch to a notebook, pen and carbon-paper.

[Rumour] Cloudboard: Google’s upcoming Web-based clipboard

A leaked internal feedback form and other data from Google suggest that the Internet search giant is getting ready to roll out a new Web-based clipboard manager called Cloudboard.
The Google Operating System blog stumbled upon the feedback form for internal testing purposes, and it gives out quite a few interesting details.
Calling it a ‘server-side clipboard for Google Apps’, the Cloudboard is kind of a replacement for Google Notebook, making it easy to paste excerpts from Google Spreadsheets to Gmail, copy multiple images from Picasa Web Albums, copy YouTube videos, copy an event and pasting it into Google Docs or Gmail, paste copied items from Google Image Search, copy maps into Google Docs, etc.
One of its coolest features seems to be an ability to automatically format the data you are copying to play nice with the app you paste it to. The form cites an example that if you copy a formatted cell in Google Spreadsheets onto the Cloudboard and then paste it into Google Docs Writer, the Cloudboard would transform the data into a comparably-styled HTML table.
This seems like it would be quite a useful app, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see Google integrate it in some way into the Chrome browser too.

Office 2010 to come in Ad-supported version

With the coming 14th version of Office, Microsoft is introducing new models for people to try out and buy the suite, which include a web-based Click-to-Run approach and an Ad-based model.

No doubt Microsoft Office is popular, and a large number of its users, especially in India, use unlicensed versions. Few here can afford even the cheapest Home and Student Edition which comes for around Rs. 300 after spending 5,000 to 10,000 on a Windows license (if they even bought that).

According to Mcrosoft's statistics, 500 million people around the world use Office, and that the last two years have seen s boost in sales of their entry-level product, the Home and Student edition of Office.

Now they plan to introduce another edition of Office, the Starter Edition. Much like the starter editions of Windows, they plan to have this product available only on new PCs. This version will be ad-supported, and will only include Word 2010 and Excel 2010, and offer "basic functionality for creating, viewing and editing documents."

Till now new laptop or PC buyers often found themselves with either a trial version of Microsoft Office, or a Microsoft Works, which is another office suite by Microsoft which has a rather poor workflow with the Microsoft Office suite. The new Starter edition of Office will replace Microsoft Works and eliminate the need for a trial by straight away giving people a version of Office which doesn't expire.

This is a smart way of raking in money from those who are uninterested or uninclined to purchase a full copy of the Office suite, and to get some money from an audience which would otherwise have just installed a pirated version.

Another new optimization in Microsofts approach towards Office is the introduction of a new "Product Key Card". It is essentially just the serial key you need to activate the version of Office bundled with your PC, and does away with everything else which is inessential, such as the DVD itself!

These new models are mostly to the benefit of those buying a new PC bundled with Office. For the people who already have PCs, Microsoft will offer a new Click-to-Run Office 2010 version, which will allow people to install and run a trial of Office 2010 with ease, and in fact it even uses virtualization technology which allows you to try Office 2010 even with an older version installed.

It is nice to see Microsoft realizing that piracy will not stop no matter how much protection you add, as people will find a way around it. The answer lies instead social engineering, providing people with something they need or want is such a way as to still make a profit, but Microsoft still needs to cater to those not buying new PCs, and provide a downloadable version, we're sure it'll end up on the web anyway.

Google: We will never be evil like Microsoft

At a press conference in New York on Wednesday, Google CEO Eric Schmidt and co-founder Sergey Brin fielded a lot of questions from the media about everything from Bing and Chrome OS to the recent Gmail outages and never being as evil as Microsoft.
Peter Kafka of AllThingsD was at hand to transcribe most of the event. Here are some of the most interesting aspects of the talk:
On Microsoft Bing, its innovations and whether it’s really different:
Brin: Competition is healthy. But many of the tweaks in Bing we’d already seen from Microsoft Live earlier in the year.
Schmidt: I agree!
On the recent Gmail outages:
Brin: We are focusing not only on outages, which we don’t like, but recovery time. The second outage could have been resolved in five or ten minutes, but we made errors in handling it, and it extended over an hour. But if you look at a typical enterprise today, those outages tend to add up to more than even these kinds of outages that we had. Also, we’re working on the number of people affected by outages, trying to group people into pods so that if one goes down, it doesn’t affect others.
On Google Books and persisting with it despite its controversies:
Schmidt: It’s not a particularly good business for us. We’re going it because we think it’s the right thing to do.
On the Google Chrome browser:
Schmidt: It’s being adopted a lot more than it seems. I see a lot of Macs in this room, and a lot of very sophisticated people are using Macs now and we need to get a version of Chrome out for that, which we’ll have in a couple of months. Key to browser strength is speed.
On hardware and phone OSes:
Brin: Hardware is getting amazing with regard to cost. Used to be that displays were expensive, but now they’re cheap, and so are chips. Now, the main cost is broadband connection, or cellular, or however you get to the Internet. That’s why wide broadband availability is important to us. Think about how much you spend on access costs compared to the amount you spend on your handset. The phone cost is negligible. I think it’s better if hardware isn’t locked down to specific platforms.
On the clash or overlap between Android and Chrome OS
Schmidt: Currently, we define Android as being for mobile, delivered via a telecom store and heavily integrated with the telco’s offerings. Chrome is designed for a 10, 12-inch form factor, like that of netbooks. They both use Linux, but they’re designed for different uses. May be some overlap there…
On Google News and getting into journalism/media:
Schmidt: We have to be very very careful not to favor one media organization over another, with regard to speed or latency. We are staying out of the media business. You guys are very good at it, and we’re not.
On reasons they will never be like Microsoft with regard to anti-trust:
Schmidt: Culture, for one. Another reason is that majority of users are one click away from moving away from us. Third: If we went into an “evil room” and had an “evil light” shined on us, and we then behaved in an “evil way”, we would be destroyed. There is a fundamental trust between Google and its users.

What is a Browser??

I've been trying to explain to my mom for months what a web browser is, with little luck. After a few rounds of failed attempts, I grew curious about people's general understanding of web browsers. So I decided to conduct a highly-scientific (read: not scientific at all) survey of my friends and got the following results:

As it turns out, my mom's not the only one who is confused about web browsers — even though the browser is one of the most-used programs on computers.

For my mom, my friends and everyone else who may be wondering about web browsers, I created a one minute video to help explain what they're all about about

I've also created a simple site, WhatBrowser.org, that gives even more information about browsers. On this site, you can see which web browser you're using, explore links to browser diagnostic tests and read some useful tips for getting the most out of your browser.

Lots of our time each day is spent online, and every page on the web is experienced through the browser. Unfortunately, most people don't realize that there are many browsers out there, which differ on features like speed, security and extensibility.

So, the next time you find yourself as the informal tech support for your family and friends, make sure to explain why their browser matters — and of course, what it is!

Logical Fallacy..

A GUY FROM NGO: Do you know this Monday we distributed chocolates among poor children?
*HR: Why?

THE GUY FROM NGO: What why? Don’t you understand? Those are poor kids. They don’t get to eat chocolates often. And you must see the smile on their face when we gave them the chocolate? I would donate every penny I have just to make those smiles eternal.
HR: Good.

THE GUY FROM NGO: What?
HR: Donate every penny you have!

THE GUY FROM NGO: What do you mean? How would you know? You never donate. You can never enjoy the joy of giving?
HR: may be.

THE GUY FROM NGO: what?
HR: I don’t find it logical what you call giving.

THE GUY FROM NGO: What? Do you know what are you speaking?
HR: yes. I am speaking about the thing you did on Monday.

THE GUY FROM NGO: What? What about it is illogical?
HR: How much nutritive value does a chocolate have?

THE GUY FROM NGO: I don’t know. But why do you want to know about a chocolate’s nutritive value?
HR: What was the price of chocolate you distributed?

THE GUY FROM NGO: 15 rupees. Their parents will never buy them those costly chocolates.
HR: What is the price of 1Kg apple of good quality?

THE GUY FROM NGO: hmmm…. 80 Rupees per kilo.
HR: How many apples do you get in a kilo?

THE GUY FROM NGO: 4 to 5.
HR: Let us be on the lower side. Say 4 in a kilo. Do you think the nutritive value of an apple is more than that of the chocolate?

THE GUY FROM NGO: Yes.
HR: Do you think the poor people you are helping can afford a 20 Rs apple to their children?

THE GUY FROM NGO: No.
HR: Good.

THE GUY FROM NGO: But….we were just helping them.
HR: still you think you really did?

THE GUY FROM NGO: But we didn’t think that much.
HR: Did someone tell you not to think?

THE GUY FROM NGO: You talk as if you never make mistakes. We are humans we make mistakes.
HR: yes I do. But I never try to alleviate the guilt by making others realizing that they also do mistakes.

THE GUY FROM NGO: It is impossible to converse with you…Okay!!...What now?. What according to you I should do now?
HR: You still don’t want to think yourselves?

THE GUY FROM NGO: Isn’t it your responsibility to propagate such ideas?
HR: What did I do right now?

Happassole

So now i shall begin. I had to wirte all this disclamer as u knw some legal issues may occur, and its better to declare it before writing. I am writing thsis article after being inspired from my close frnd Tanmay Desai.. U may read his blog too.. sophomore22...

Now what does this Happassole mean?? well it is not just a word.... it has deep connection with my life, my nature, the people have a look on me... It means Happy- Asshole ( * read disclamer for objection!)..
now i will tell u how i got such a name. Well am basically a person who is always happy. I believe in being happy no matter what ever the matter be, i love being happy and making ppl ( people) haapy..
And this is a reason for other ppl arround me who get jealous by seeing me happy.. They think that how come this asshole is always happy inspite of being in dramatically devastating conditons?? Well now here i may like to add something about me..
So readers keep ur spirits up!! and carry on..I am physically handicapped person by birth.. Ya i am.. but i never felt thatr coz of my mom! She always inspired me to fight all problems and never give up.. As doctors say i have conjenital disorder.. and am certified of 80% dissability.. LOLz.. But always treated as not Dissability and Different ability.. as i a can do things that no others can.. ya, there are many ting that i cant.. Like i cant play cricket like all of u, i cant play soccer like ronaldo. i cant dance like MJ, but what i can do no one can...
Now tis is the spirit that makes me going on in this world of measaries..
Now currently i am studying in 3rd year of computer engg in a reknowned college of my state.. I have always seen myself in the mirror as others, i dont know why? but my dissability never came in my eyes. I always treated my self s normal. But the time i step out of my empire and penetrate the world if urs i am realised every secxond of being what i am... Now thats it a bullshit..!! i dnt care actually...
Whenever i was challenged i completed it with guts and was victorious.. But still ppl cant seem to see that.. They are ready with their own excuses.
Now it has been almost 3 years i have not got any success in life. After entering college my life totally changed. I was feeling good in the early daus of my college life as i got admission in the top most and most reputed college of our state.. but then slowly and gradually that feeling vanished. I dont know how but i stared feeling numb.. and alone.. May be one of the reason was that i could see love couples all arround and always thought that wen will this day come in my life?? For some days i felt lonely but then as i say this asshole cant stay sad and again i got happy and continued with the life God gave me. I never complained about what i had, i just felt a lil different. Now u mite understand.
Then came some good frnds in my life... and increased... We all are a gang of say nerve wreaking guys!! we never seem to be serious we are always in our own world..

Then in 3rd year of my college i met tanmay.. i told u about him in the starting.. I and tanmay share the same feelings about the world, the crap education systema nd the most the administration zombies of our department!!
I have a same problem that why do ppl see only the percentage of a individual and categorize him as an intelligent or a moron?? Is there nothing to do woth a ability of a person???? we both are technically sound.. I dntmeanb that we code for google!! haha. but we are better than most of the sheeps of our college ( Dept..)
Why do companies that come for capus and recruitment see a persons merit marks?? And not his understanding and creativity?? Does creartivity of a person has nothing to do with??? Doesnt it matter the most??? Even Einstien has damn weak in studies but his interest in physics and creativity in maths led him to be what we know as Einstein!! I dont sat that we have they calibre of the type of Einstein.. We are not even supposed to be under estimated.. no.. no... never.. at no cost..
I triesd to get good marks in my lyf of college from all the years i have studied! but i neber managed to score a distinction! No that doesnt matter.. does it??? Well i dnt know why we have such a system of education here???
It really sucks man!! A person is not considered to be intelligent if he is creative but ya.. wait a minute if u a re a buttering guy, if u can butter any one and u have good percentage then u are a genius.. and all the others are assholes!!
So, thats what i am.. a Bloody Happy Asshole... (Happassole).. and frankly speaking am happy!!!! about what i am...
No regrets no complaints but ya let my tym come.. i show all these jurks wat a happy asshole can do! Let my tume arrive , till then i will wait.. And if i got a chance i cud surely like to change this crao educational system for sure..
That is a dream that i see.......
Oops .. sorry i know this is quite a long one.. but sorry i cant stop writing once am in the zone.. sorry if i hurt ur feelings..
Have a nice day.....

Thank You,

Do Comment on how it is......................
